2) Now the Dinosaurs killed themselves! ….by farting too much…

Straight from the “Weird, but yes they’re serious” files, a report came out this past week studying the volume of flatulent gases produced by the dinosaurs. Now of course, they didn’t actually study the volume of gases produced, the researchers just speculated based on the methane production of various large animals we have today. Their conclusion? Dinosaurs farted so much that they actually caused global warming, which killed the dinosaurs.

You can read the original technical article here in Current Biology, aBBCreport, or anarticle from Slashgear.

As Michael Rider from Slashgear put it, “Every school kid knows that the dinosaurs were wiped out by a massive climate changing event.”

If you’ll recall, two years ago 41 scientists banded together to finally proclaim that “Yes! It was an asteroid that killed the dinosaurs!” With such a large group of scientists reaching a consensus, they must be right, right? I mean, that’s what several anti-creationists contended at least.

Not two weeks later (!?!?!) a second group of scientists said “No, no, no, it wasn’t an asteroid that killed the dinosaurs – that’s not what the evidence shows! The evidence shows it was a sudden temperature drop!” In other words global cooling killed the dinosaurs. (“So much for consensus” and “Good grief! Now they’re saying the dinosaurs froze to death!“)

Now two years later, another team of scientists contend the dinosaurs actually caused global warming. It should be noted that although some (like Rider from Slashgear) made the obvious connection alluded to by the article, the original researchers in the Current Biology article did not say global warming killed the dinosaurs.

So why then are all of these scientists directly contradicting each other? Why is it, after decades of debate, they still do not know what killed the dinosaurs? Sadly, as I pointed out in my “41 scientists finally figure it out…?” article, it is because they are denying the obvious conclusion. We find fossil clams that have been buried alive with the dinosaur remains. What does that have to do with an asteroid or dinosaur flatulence? Nothing – it is indicative of a flood. When we do find dinosaurs intact (quite rare), almost always we find them in the “death pose”indicative of asphyxiation. While one may wonder if this asphyxiation was caused by dinosaur flatulence (talk about silent but deadly!), studies have shown over and over again what I have contended for years: This is evidence of drowning. A previous report by Faux and Padian came to this conclusion, and in November last year, another report came out affirming this interpretation from a completely different angle. Using dead chickens in cold water, the researchers found the chicken’s head would pull back almost immediately.

I have excavated dinosaurs and dinosaur tracks in multiple locations. The evidence profoundly points to a flood having killed the dinosaurs. The scale of the deposits shows it had to have been a world-wide flood! But there is an unwritten rule in science that you must not acknowledge a world-wide flood. If you deny the obvious, then you are left with nothing but wild, unfounded speculation. The evidence shows that it was a global flood (we would contend it was the flood of Noah, described in the Bible) that killed the dinosaurs we find in mass fossil graves today, not an asteroid, or flatulence, or any of the other wild and unfounded stories proposed to deny the obvious.

3) Special report #2: The strange fossil footprints of Horton Bluff, Nova Scotia

Back in 2003, I was one of the leaders on a field trip to the Joggins fossil cliffs of Nova Scotia, Canada, with the Creation Science Association of Quebec. Many in the group only wrote and spoke French, and the then Joggins Fossil Center had a pamphlet in French from the Museum of Nova Scotia. In this pamphlet, they spoke of a mysterious trail of fossil footprints from a “crocodile like creature” which was found at Horton Bluff in the 1960’s. Now because the pamphlet was primarily about the Joggins fossil cliffs, and I did not know the area all that well yet, I assumed that Horton bluff was one of the many bluffs at Joggins, and thus I didn’t know where this trail was.

Turns out this trail was over at an area known as Blue Beach, on the south shore of the Bay of Fundy. During a research trip in 2007 with Vance Nelson (owner and director of Creation Truth Ministries and Canada’s largest traveling Creation Museum), we went to Blue Beach – a spectacular site for some of the strangest ichnofossils (fossil footprints or markings made by the locomotion of animals) I have ever seen on earth. We also found the mysterious trail of which I had seen old, grainy photos of years prior.

The first thing that struck me about the trail was that this was clearly made by a bipedal (two-legged) animal! This was no crocodile like creature! Whatever creature it was that made these tracks, it was walking on two feet, was quite large, and was obviously struggling in moving water which was affecting how it walked and stepped.

The Museum of Nova Scotia claims the tracks were made by a creature known as Baropezia. It would appear that the Museum of Nova Scotia agrees with my interpretation of the tracks (we only disagree with regards to the track maker), as even though Baropezia walks on four legs, they depict it making the trail while walking in deep water, with only its back two feet making footprints! See for yourself here.

In 2005, Dr. Spencer Lucas, of the New Mexico Museum of Natural History, called the Baropezia identification “…an embarrasingly bad blunder.” (From the Halifax Herald : http://haba.ca

So what was it that made the trail of fossil footprints then? Lucas suggested the “tracks” were made by… fish flippers! (no kidding?)

I have to agree with Lucas that the tracks do not even vaguely resemble those of Baropezia.

However, Lucas’s reinterpretation of the tracks as fish flipper markings is, frankly, just as embarrassing. The tracks show a U-shaped foot, with a clearly imprinted, large claw off of the big toe. These were most certainly not fish flippers.

In 2010, I went to Blue Beach (where the tracks are located) with a couple of homeschool families. We set up a string grid over the trail, mapped out and photographed the tracks, and molded one of the better tracks. The map is shown right, grid squares are 1 foot.

By examining the trail, one can see where the creature was essentially hopping on one foot, apparently being bouyed up and

attempting to battle current. Some of the tracks are faint while others quite deep, again evidence that the creature was being bouyed up in water. The wave ripples give an indication of water flow, shown on the map as a paleocurrent. The track which was molded was at grid S3, and the cast of that mold is on display in the Creation Exhibition collection.

The track that was molded in 2010, in grid square S3 on the map.

These were the strangest fossil footprints I had ever seen in my life. A very strange “U” shaped track. The Museum of Nova Scotia’s website had an outline of the tracks. The only point I would mention is that the tracks clearly had a large claw off the tip of the larger toe (which is visible as a shallower depression in the track above, off the tip of the toe closest to the camera), and this claw was not clearly drawn on the MNS outlines.

Outline drawings of the Horton Bluff mystery tracks, after the Museum of Nova Scotia,

prominent claw off the tip of the large toe is absent in the drawing.

Who Done It?

So just what then made these tracks? I went looking for a creature that had U-shaped feet, was bipedal, quite large, had a single claw off the larger toe, the larger toe was on the inside of the stride, and something (a heel?) made a dimple impression on the back end of the footprint, slightly off-center towards the outside stride, or short toe side, of the foot.

I believe I have found the culprit:

He done it! (and he looks guilty too!)

Let’s examine Ostrich feet in light of what we can interpret from the Blue Beach tracks:

Ostrich feet have two large toes in a “U” shape, the larger toe being on the inside of the step. The larger toe has one prominent claw off of its tip. The ostrich is a large, bipedal animal, and when walking in deep mud, the heel does leave an impression.

With the help of the kind folks at the Delalta Ostrich Ranch, near Calgary, Alberta, I ran some experiments. Clinton and Dianne kindly let me hose down their yard, and we managed to get one of their ostriches to run through the mud. Now unfortunately, the ground was so incredibly hard packed, that even after a lot of water, the mud still was not as soft as it obviously was at Blue Beach when the mystery fossil tracks were made. I also obtained plenty of video footage studying how the ostriches walk, which in itself was quite enlightening.

The deepest of the tracks made at the ostrich ranch was a dead-ringer match for the Blue Beach ichnofossils:

(Click on image for high resolution image)

As the ostrich walks, it lifts its foot, then points it claw down, with the claw going into the dirt first. As the ostrich’s foot depresses, the claw “flicks” dirt up, leaving a claw impression (marked separately in the left image above). The heel leaves a dimple at the back of the footprint, off center to the smaller toe side of the track. As you can see, though the toes are quite a bit different in size, in soft mud they tend to leave depressions that are almost equal in size. The resulting “U” shaped footprint matches the mystery tracks at Blue Beach to a “T” (or “U” :). The only difference is size: The Blue Beach tracks are about 3 inches longer than the modern ostrich foot, yet giantism is also well known from the fossil record – most fossils found are larger than their modern counterparts.

Okay, so it’s an ostrich. Who cares?

There is a reason why none of the researchers have ever identified the track maker at Blue Beach. It is because the rocks the tracks are in are alleged to be 350 million years old – long before the dinosaurs allegedly evolved. But….birds were supposed to have evolved from dinosaurs! So here we have good evidence of completely modern birds (the ostrich) in rocks allegedly far older than the dinosaurs the birds were supposed to have evolved from. You cannot be your grandfather’s father, and thus no evolutionary researcher has ever considered that these mystery tracks could be from a bird.

Interestingly, it was at this very site that William Logan, back in the 1800’s, found a slab of rock containing what sure looked like fossil bird tracks. Sternberg, writing about these tracks in 1933, said these tracks “superficially … resemble the tracks of some of the wading birds, but of course there is little probability of their having been made by birds” (C.M. Sternberg, Carboniferous tracks from Nova Scotia. Geological Society of America Bulletin 44:951-964, 1933)

Why is there little probability of them being made by wading birds? For one reason only: Evolution trumps science and reason, and evolution dictates that birds had not yet evolved at that time, therefore these must not be fossil bird tracks.

It is much more reasonable to suggest that the fossil tracks at Horton Bluff were made by birds, and therefore evolution has been falsified. That’s what good science would suggest.
