June 1999, Introduction to Creation and Evolution

In order to understand what the scientific ramifications are of the evidences discussed here, one needs first to take a look at the models of Creation and Evolution and the differences between the two.

Really, the two models exhaust all other possibilities1. There has been some elaborate theories regarding aliens transplanting us here and genetically engineering life on earth, but let's briefly examine that: Just the fact that this theory holds so much sway is acknowledging design in the Universe and life. But in actual fact this doesn't answer the question "Where did I come from?", it is in fact a cop-out with very seemingly appealing intellectuality. It only brings up the question "Where did the aliens come from?"

Let's be honest here; the only reason we would prefer to believe aliens transplanted us here is because our mind's picture of an alien, albeit a superior being, if far less of a superior being that what God is in our minds. That is why we would, as human beings, prefer to believe in aliens rather than God. It is less of an inferiority complex; no accountability, we can still fight back or die trying if we don't like our "Creator."

The two models of evolution and creation really do exhaust all other possibilities.

Evolution:

Naturalistic evolution is a model which suggests (many claim as fact) that we are literally the result of random chance. Many hundreds of millions of years ago there was a "Primordial soup" on the earth, an ocean which contained many of the essential elements of life. These elements, through random mixing and bumping into each other formed things like proteins, the basic building blocks of life. Eventually enough was made and by random transformations, joining, etc... a single cell was formed.. Cells formed joined together to create the first simple lifeforms which over extremely long periods of time with random mutations these simple lifeforms spawned more complex lifeforms. Gradually becoming more and more complex these lifeforms finally spawned us, the ultimate expression of the Universe - the human being. All of this took incredible luck and lots of time and failures. For the sake of time, I will not get into details on these or astronomical theories except as the lessons demand. For the moment, I will refer to the evidences we will look for.

Transitional fossils are an intermediate life form, a half-way between two life forms in the evolutionary change. For example, half-man, half-ape would be a transitional fossil. Half-lizard, half bird; half-fish, half-amphibian are some more examples.

If Evolution has occured, we should expect to find the following scientific evidences suggesting this:

  • Evidences suggesting an old earth, Universe and life (billions of years)
  • Simple lifeforms gradually appearing, followed by more complex lifeforms in the fossil record
  • Transitional fossils (more will be discussed on this issue later)

Creation:

The creation model is based primarily on the biblical record of creation, namely Genesis. "In the beginning, God created..." everything! It claims that the Universe, Earth and all lifeforms were created in six days2, apparently a literal six days. James Ussher, an Anglican Arch Bishop many years ago created a timeline using the geneologies of the bible and pinpointed the beginning of creation at

Sunday, October 23, 9 a.m., 4004 B.C.

Now biblically speaking this number is probably pretty accurate and that would place the age of the earth and life at around 6000 years old. Interestingly, Genesis chapter 7 documents a global catastrophic flood that took place. Arguments have been made that this flood was a localized flood (affecting the middle eastern regions), not a global flood. We will examine scientific evidences to see if they suggest one or the other.

If the Creation model were accurate we should expect to find the following scientific evidences:

  • Evidences suggesting a young earth, Universe and life.
  • No transitional fossils
  • Simple and complex lifeforms appearing suddenly and together
  • Evidences of a flood and how extensive it was

So what do we find as we examine the world around us scientifically?
